Celebrating 50 years of Triratna
On Sunday 9 April the Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Nottingham sanghas gathered at the Birmingham Buddhist Centre to celebrate 50 years of the Triratna Buddhist Community. Karen Jones, a Mitra in Shrewsbury, kindly shared her thoughts on the day…
Some of the Shrewsbury Sangha went to the Birmingham Buddhist Centre to celebrate Triratna Buddhist Community’s 50th birthday which was a great day with friends old and new. The programme was led by Singhamati, Saravantu and Arthabandhu (chairs of the Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Nottingham Buddhist Centres). We heard a little about what was going on in 1967 (including the first cash point and the legalisation of homosexuality), with an account of that first meeting in a room beneath a shop in London.
The speakers acknowledged difficulties within the movement while celebrating its many achievements – which include, of course, bringing the Dharma to us all. Ratnaguna gave a talk entitled Story Of A Foolish Person-My Life In Triratna which is available at freebuddhistaudio.com and well worth a listen. We had a magnificent feast for lunch, including birthday cake, and enjoyed the sunshine in the beautiful gardens. We had a lovely puja then headed home again, having spent time with all sorts of folks, and feeling a sense of the wider community.
I feel so grateful for these opportunities to study the Dharma, at Sangha Night, in Mitra study, on retreat, online and in study days whilst being supported by Order members and fellow Mitras alike. Over the last four and a half years I have gained so much from being part of the Shrewsbury Sangha and am delighted and inspired as we travel together on this long and winding path towards Enlightenment.
