3-10 April in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire
Dharmashalin and Maitrisara will be leading an exploration of the Karaniyametta Sutta, the Buddha’s teaching on love. Enjoy a week of meditation, discussion, ritual and friendship. Suitable for anyone who has completed one introduction to meditation and buddhism course or equivalent. Booking essential – contact the office at email@example.com. Cost £325 (waged) or £215 (unwaged).
The Kariniyametta sutta is probably the most well known scriptural source on how to practise metta or loving kindness. This succinct sutta sets out a vision and then clearly explains the preparation we need to do, the approach we need to follow and as a consequence, what the results will be. By studying the sutta we can root our understanding and practice in the earliest teachings of the Buddha.
During the morning workshop/presentations we will be breaking the sutta into sections and through presentations and discussion, getting to the heart of what this sutta can teach us. In the afternoons there will be a chance to learn more about the metta bhavana practice itself in meditation workshops. We will also have small groups, ritual practice in the evenings and plenty of time for walking in the lovely wooded countryside around the youth hostel. There will be one silent day in the middle of the retreat to create conditions for us to relax more deeply into our inner experience.
This is our third year at Coalbrookdale Youth Hostel. That’s because we really like it there! We have loved taking over the whole space and decorating it with shrines and flags. We are able to plan the menus ourselves under Singhamati’s expert guidance (she used to help run a retreat centre!) and live as a community, sharing jobs like chopping vegetables and washing up. Accommodation is in shared en suite rooms.
This is a sangha retreat – being on retreat with others from the Birmingham Buddhist Centre allows friendships to form and a sense of community to grow. This is a wonderful way to deepen practice and strengthen the relationships within the Sangha and we’d love you to join us.
